The Importance of Grooming your Dog Young.

Regular grooming is important for your dogs health and well being, as well as for their appearance.

Starting grooming at home when they are puppies is best, as they are capable of learning new behaviors and can tolerate new things more readily. It acquaints them to the grooming process and makes it easier as they grow older. The more they are exposed, the better they will handle the situation.

Taking them to a professional groomer early helps them get used to the smells, sounds and sensations and allows the groomer to form a bond with your puppy.

Grooming may include bathing, brushing, clipping nails, brushing teeth or simply just handling puppy's paws and ears.

Benefits of Grooming at Home

  • Keeps puppy healthy and gets them used to being handled.
  • Creates a bond between you and your puppy. It is time spent just the two of you.
  • You are able to check for abnormalities on the dogs coat such as,
    • Fleas or ticks
    • Skin issues such as dry patches, hot spots or cracked skin
    • Broken Nails
    • Cracked, inflamed paw pads,
    • Ear issues such as redness, odor or discharge
  • Brushing will remove dead hair and dirt whilst preventing matts and tangles to form. Brushing also helps to distribute natural oils from the skin through the dogs fur leaving it silky.
  • Getting your puppy used to teeth brushing is good to help prevent periodontal disease and expensive vet bills later in life.
  • Keeping nails at appropriate lengths helps to avoid overgrown nails and prevents injury to you, your puppy and your furniture.

How often should I groom my dog?

How often depends on what kind of breed they are and their coat type. As a rule, long haired dogs require grooming more often as they tend to get dirtier easier and matted faster.

In warmer months, dogs will shed their undercoats. Brushing helps encourage shedding and will lessen the amount of hair on your clothes and furniture.

If you would like to know more about how to groom your dog and what to use, pop in and see us at Harry and Sam, we would love to help.

  • Choose times when they are relaxed, tired and less energetic.
  • Limit sessions to a few minutes at a time- puppies have short attention spans.
  • Use the correct tools. Talk to us at Harry and Sam, we can recommend the correct brushes and combs.
  • Talk in a reassuring manner.
  • Always allow the dog to see the brush or comb first, so they know what is coming.
  • REWARD, REWARD, REWARD. Treats, playing with toys or a good cuddle and praise. Find what works for your pup.
  • Book in for one of our Puppy Training Packages. See below for more information.

" Make sure the grooming sessions are fun. The brush shouldn't be scary."
